Types of Committees

Standing Committees

Standing committees are committees that meet regularly and are consistent year to year. They generally advise departments and offices or focus on a specific issue. A number, though not all, of the Standing Committees are University-wide committees organized by the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty. A directory of those committees is available here. Students are appointed to these committees in the spring and fall of each year. The appointment process involves filling out an application and attending an interview. Current appointees and members of the ASM Shared Governance Committee vote on appointments. Click here to view this year’s specific application procedure.

Short Term (Ad Hoc) Committees

Short term committees often arise unexpectedly and are created to deal with a specific issue or hiring decision. They are dissolved after completing their charge. Application procedures are varied; check the ASM Shared Governance website mainpage often for open positions. If you are interested in hearing about short term committee opportunities, you can be added to our list by emailing the Shared Governance Project Assistant, Nicholas Brigham Schmuhl.

System Committees

Occasionally, the UW System or UW System Board of Regents will convene a taskforce or special committee for a specific purpose. These committees generally have an appointment process involving a cover letter and résumé and an interview. Current appointees and members of the ASM Shared Governance Committee vote on appointments. Check the ASM Shared Governance website mainpage often for open positions.
