SB 107 - Call to Action

Summary:

There is a bill on the calendar for the Assembly floor tomorrow afternoon that will eliminate tenant rights. Senate Bill 107 eliminates local ordinances that are currently in place to protect student renters. Some examples of this include the ordinance that prohibits landlords from showing your apartment without giving 24-hour notice and the ordinance that prohibits landlords from requiring Social Security numbers.

Tomorrow, SB107 will be on the Assembly floor. SB107 is harmful to all renters in the state of Wisconsin, but particularly student renters. If passed, SB107 would eliminate local ordinances that protect renters, and would prohibit the creation of any new ordinances.

The Associated Students of Madison as well as United Council of UW-Students have planned a state-wide call-in day for Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Students should call their legislator and ask them to please vote no on this piece of legislation. A letter has also been signed by several of the presidents and vice presidents of UW-System student governments and has been shared with the Assembly. Please use the phone script below and refer to the links for more information.

Hi, My name is _____________. My address is _______________ and I am a constituent of Representative _________________. I am also a student at UW-______________ and a member of United Council of UW Students. I am calling about 2 bills being voted on today on the floor. I am opposed to Senate Bill 107 because it removes landlord restrictions which protect tenants and limits local control in municipalities, including mine. I am asking the Representative to vote NO on SB 107. Thank you for taking my call. Have a great day.
