Fall 2007 Election Rules

ASM Election Rules - Fall 2007

1. The elections will be considered in effect from 8:00 am on October 16 through 8:00 pm on October 18.

2. Candidates and sponsors of initiative, recall or referenda must attend the mandatory information session on September at 6:00 pm.

3. Campaigners may use water-based chalk in areas of campus that are readily exposed to the elements. Any place where it rains is fair chalking ground, but chalking shall not be used on the sides of buildings.

4. Posters may be hung on bulletin boards not marked for specific purposes. They shall not be posted on the ground.

5. Candidates and initiative, recall and referenda sponsors shall not refer to other candidates or initiative, recall or referenda in any campaign material without delivering the prior written consent of the candidate or question to be mentioned to the SEC Chair.

6. Candidates, initiative, recall and referenda sponsors, and their affiliates shall respect the postings and chalking of other candidates by not covering or restricting the viewing of them in any way.

7. Candidates shall not use ASM resources in their campaigns without prior approval from the SEC or Student Judiciary. This includes but is not limited to ASM computers, office supplies, office space, and ASM funds. Campaign discussions shall not occur in the ASM office.

8. All state, city, and university rules regarding campaigning or advertising shall apply to candidates, initiative, recall and referenda sponsors, and their affiliates in the election. Any alleged violation of such rules shall be assessed by the SEC in addition to referral to the proper authority for enforcement and or intervention.

9. Any candidate or sponsor of initiative, recall or referenda who fails to observe all election rules is subject to immediate removal from the ballot and or any lesser punishment that the SEC decides.

10. Candidates, initiative, recall and referenda sponsors, and their affiliates shall not campaign within 100 feet of designated polling places including University-owned computer labs. Campaigning includes, but is not limited to, chalking, postering, and personal advocacy.

11. ASM has the sole authority to set up polling locations, defined as two or more computers staffed or marked for the purpose of soliciting the vote of the general student population.

12. Any individual or group that: (1) mimics a polling location, or (2) deceives or harasses the voting public; will be subject to SEC investigation and appropriate sanction, up to and including, but not limited to, removal from the ballot.

 

13. Misspelled names or names that closely resemble one another for write-in candidates may be merged together if the names are close to the actual spelling of the real name. The SEC / SJ shall have the discretion as to the method of verifying write-in votes.

14. Ballots shall not be counted until the election has completed.
