Internships

If you're looking to become more involved on campus, learn more about UW Administration, Madison City Council, State Legislature, or Federal Congress, or advocate for issues with your student government, you should consider applying for an internship with ASM.

ASM internships are 2-3 credit "courses" available each semester with varying focuses, depending on your interests. Internships can center on everything from legislative affairs or campus relations to diversity or academic affairs - it's all up to you! Interns generally work with a faculty member of their choosing and register for an independent study in that faculty member's department.

Interns work closely with the ASM committee chairs and ASM staff to accomplish UW-Madison advocacy goals and work on student issues concerning social change and justice. ASM combines the optimistic enthusiasm of college students with political expertise, grassroots organizing methods, and professionalism to address and react to student concerns and issues. In addition to playing a major role in shaping the University, interns also build problem-solving skills, meet new people, and get hands-on experience working for issues that matter to them.

Each semester, 12 to 20 students are selected to participate in ASM's Internship Program. For 3 credits, students must:

  • Meet weekly with an Intern Coordinator, either a student who has successfully completed the internship program or a professional ASM organizer
  • Attend weekly campaign or committee meetings
  • Attend a weekly intern class, from 4:45-6:00pm on Thursdays in the Red Gym Mezzanine
  • Learn and practice grassroots organizing skills on campus or community projects
  • Attend a weekend training session in the fall

Does this sound like a good fit for you? We're hiring interns for Fall 2008.  E-mail Anjali Bhasin at bhasin2@wisc.edu or Lisa Aarli at aarli@wisc.edu if you have questions.
