S.A.C. 101

Please stay tuned for information on when applications for fall 2008 allocations will be available!

Student Activity Center (S.A.C.) 101

Where will the Student Activity Center be located?

The SAC will be located on the third and fourth floors of the new University Square building. The building will reside between University Avenue and W. Johnson Street, borded by Lake St., in the same location as the previous University Square. You'll notice on this page a video showing the up-to-the-minute progress of the construction site.

What is the purpose of the SAC?

The purpose of the SAC is to provide a centralized area where many UW-Madison organizations can work and collaborate. It provides organizations with a cubby space or storage locker, not to mention all the benefits that come with the creation of a brand new building. Some of those benefits include state of the art meeting and conference rooms, a large rooftop deck, study areas including a study lounge with a fireplace, a multipurpose room equipped for dancing, student-art lined gallery hallway, kitchen for ethnic clubs to cook, coffee cart and vending machines, not to mention numerous windows, comfy chairs, computers, lockers, and a bridge.

I heard that the SAC is being paid for with segregated fees--who decided that?

In short, students decided. The project originated as an idea between several students in ASM and other key players on campus such as University Health Services. ASM saw a need for more space on campus for RSOs and UHS was looking to be more centrally located on campus. To make sure we had the full support of the students, we put a referendum on the ballot several years ago for the ASM elections and it passed by a large margin. By passing it through a referendum, students showed their support and made the decision to move forward.

What organizations on campus will be relocated to the SAC after the year 2008?

There will be permanent and semi-permanent space provided for student organizations. To obtain an application to access semi-permanent space, click HERE. The permanent anchor tenants will be Student Print, WSUM-Radio, the  student-run business incubator and the ASM offices.

How can my organization apply for space in the SAC?

Any Registered Student Organization may apply for space in the building by filling out and submitting an application by December 14th, 2008. To obtain an application, click HERE.

Who will make the decision on what organizations get space in the new SAC?

Those decisions will be made by the SAC Governing Board, a committee of the Associated Students of Madison. For more information on the SAC Governing Board, click HERE

I see Steve Brown ads around the building site. Can you explain the layout of the University Square building?

Absolutely. There is confusion as to why there are Steve Brown advertisements around the construction site. This is because there will be two different buildings, one building consists of Steve Brown apartments while the other building, provides the services listed below.

Underground: Parking for moped, bikes, and cars alike.

Floors 1&2: Ground level retail. These are stores similar to those existing in the previous
University Square.

Floors 3&4: The Student Activity Center.

Floors 5-8:  University Health Services. UHS is relocating to a more convenient area for students and staff of University of Wisconsin.

Floors 9&10:  Bursars Office and UW Financials. Both of these services are also moving into a nicer and more centrally located site.

Wondering how to get involved? Volunteer on  the Student Activity Center Committee! The committee meets every other Monday at 6:30 PM T.I.T.U.
