Recognizing the importance of learning the history of the UW campus, broadening his perspective, and challenging his views, Steven began his preparation for ASM in September and was elected as Diversity Chair in November.
After his election, Steven built the committee up from scratch. He launched a successful re-establishment process that consisted of re-structuring the committee, developing a new mission, gaining the interest and support of organizations around the campus, and becoming an influential voice on campus—all during the university's critical transition towards a new framework for diversity initiatives.
Developed a new communications/outreach infrastructure (including a new website!) with the campus community, fundamentally changing how Diversity Committee interacts with organizations and allowing for new avenues of collaborations.
After meeting with students, faculty, and staff across the campus, Steven engaged the campus in pushing a new inclusive vision for diversity on campus and helped influence this process through speaking engagements and panel discussions.
The Diversity Committee is currently working to fundamentally change the message and approach to diversity on campus with a vision that includes every student and is reflected in every institution of the university. The ultimate goal is to broaden the intellectual scope of the campus and institute diversity as a natural component to education.
Delivering a speech to System and University administration, urging the campus to break out of the status quo diversity mindset and take the lead in innovative, inclusive diversity initiatives.
Steven ran into Jeff Wright and Kurt Gosselin at the ASM Kick-Off, and after many conversations, Steven was encouraged to run for the position.
Steven plans to pursue his dreams in non-profits, consulting, and the entertainment world. After attending Business or Law School, Steven hopes to start a variety of establishments, including a non-profit organization. Eventually, he might engage in some form of public service.
