Hannah joined ASM in the spring of 2007, wanting get involved on campus and make a tangible difference. She heard about ASM through a tabling event at Chadbourne, where she lived freshman year, and she was finally recruited at an information session regarding ASM's internship program.
One of my main accomplishments was being a part of the Study Day campaign. There were five of us that worked to build support for our project, which was to acquire a study day between the end of classes and the beginning of finals. After a long process through the University Committee and gathering faculty, staff, and student support, we received confirmation that a trial year would be provided for the Study Day beginning Fall of 2009. I have to continue to follow up with this project in order to ensure that the study day remains a facet of the academic calendar.
Another smaller accomplishment was working with the Facilities Planning and Management department to ensure that snow removal was greatly improved on this campus.
Recently I have been working to resolve some of the issues surrounding "Homeless Night." A transitional event typically experienced by students, it is a 24-hour period between the end of a lease and the beginning of another. My goals for the project are to provide free parking lots to students that will have UWPD patrols as well as a campus space, such as the Student Activity Center, open 24 hours to allow for students to relax and hang out while sheltered from the elements.
External Affairs is the committee within ASM that is charged with maintaining connections with the state student association, United Council of UW Students, and the national student association, United States Student Association. We outreach to the campus community to recruit for events such as USSA's annual Legislative Conference held in Washington D.C. as well as United Council General Assemblies, where student government leaders throughout Wisconsin work to address higher education issues. Board members of each organization, UC and USSA, serve on this committee.
My favorite memory is when I received, via e-mail, the approval of the trial study day from the University Committee. It confirmed that our efforts had been recognized, the need had been acknowledged, and we helping our fellow students.
I hope to enter into the Peace Corps. Additionally, I hope to pursue a master's degree in International Conflict Resolution or a J.D. in International Law.
